Five-star Swifts make it two wins from two at Romford

SWIFTS ran out convincing winners against Essex rivals Romford with a commanding display at Ship Lane on Wednesday night.

Romford came fresh from an encouraging 1-1 draw away at Bury Town on Saturday.

And, on a warm evening on an excellent Ship Lane pitch which suited Swifts’ passing style, Spanish striker Juan Luque, on for his first start, carried on where he left off on Saturday with a series of strong runs and quality crosses.

Home keeper Michael Gooch was kept busy in the early stages and Swifts were soon ahead when Sam Bantick scored with a shot at his near post.

Boro pushed for an equaliser and Guillem Ramon made a fine last-ditch tackle to save a certain goal.

And from the ensuing break away Luke Callander’s fierce drive was well saved by Gooch to redeem his earlier mistake.

Swifts then made it 2 when a well worked corner routine saw centre half Ryan Henshaw left with a close range header as the home defence looked on. Callander nearly made it 3 when the home keeper saved at his feet just before half time.

With Swifts 2-0 up at half-time, Luque got the goal he deserved when running on to an excellent lay off by Callander and coolly slotting home, left footed.

Gooch kept his side in it with a superb close range save from a Bantick volley before Romford pulled a goal back on  71 minutes when Jonathon Nzengo scrambled home.

Luque bagged a superb second with a dipping 20-yard free kick after sub and debutant Joe Gardner was fouled.

The impressive Harrison Chatting made it five on 90 minutes when his fierce left footed strike from an acute angle went under Gooch’s body.

So it was an excellent evening for the Swifts who, despite the earlier loss of last season’s top scorer Reece Grant to Braintree, are looking a good unit.

Heybridge have a trip Haverhill Rovers in the FA Cup on Saturday and will be looking to start a good run in the competition.
