Luke’s late leveller earns Swifts a Trophy replay on Tuesday night

LUKE CALLANDER’S late leveller in Kent on Saturday saw Swifts earn a deserved replay against Bostik Premier Tonbridge at Scraley Road on Tuesday evening (October 31).

After a quiet start at a sunny and impressive Longmead Stadium, the game burst into life with five goals in an amazing nine-minute spell.

Spanish striker Juan Luque headed home the first powerfully at the near post from an excellent cross by Sam Bantick to give Heybridge an early lead.

The hosts were level within two minutes when striker Dan Thompson controlled and turned to score with an excellent angled drive which went in off keeper Danny Sambridge’s far post.

Swifts went ahead again when Ben Sampayo’s excellent ball down the line found Luque on the left and his first-time cross from the left allowed Bantick to slot home.

The goals just kept coming and Angels were level four minutes later when Joe Turner latched on to a poor clearance to fire home.

And three minutes later, Xavier Vidal put the hosts ahead for the first time following an effort saved by Sambridge which came off the crossbar.

A crowd of 405 were certainly getting value for their money but it was to be over an hour until the next goal was scored.

Luque had a shot cleared off the line in the second half before Swifts boss Jody Brown brought on strikers Josh Fagbohun and debutant Ricky Sappleton, a mid-week signing from Kingstonian – making it a four-man attack.

Sappleton had an excellent chip tipped over by Jonathan Henly before the equaliser came nine minutes from time.

Callander was able to shrug off a challenge from young defender Callum Adonis-Taylor side and step Christopher Kinnear before coolly slotting home.

Swifts were once again applauded off by a large travelling following who had once again witnessed their side matching comfortably a team from a higher level.

They now face a replay this Tuesday night at the Aspen Waite Arena – before the big FA Cup tie at Exeter next Sunday (November 5).
