Swifts chairman issues rallying call ahead of points-per-game promotion dogfight

SWIFTS chairman Gary White says it is vital they finish the campaign strongly to have any chance of promotion in the midst of the football pyramid restructure by the FA.

Only five out of the seven Step 4 division’s play-off winners will go up this season under the plans.

Those promoted will be clubs with the best points-per-game ratio (PPG), meaning those who win play-off finals after finishing lower in their league tables are less likely to go up.

Swifts’ current ratio of 2.030 PPG means they are seventh of the currently eligible teams.

Heybridge are third in the Bostik North table and in a play-off pack of four teams separated by three points. They will finish their campaign with trips to Tilbury, champions elect Bowers and Bury Town, and visits from promotion rivals Aveley and Coggeshall.

And with the incentive of having home advantage in the play-off semi-finals for finishing second or third, White says it will be vital to collect as many of those 15 available points as possible.

He added: “It’s the last five games of the season and to even have a chance of being able to get promoted in the play-offs we need as many points as possible.

“We are quietly confident, of course, having won 13 out of 15 league games under Julian Dicks.

“But what this all means is these last five games are absolutely vital – and as vital as the upcoming play-off games, which means we need your support more than ever.”
