SWIFTS are ready for a (potential!) day of destiny when a new ‘Battle of Maldon’ takes place at Park Drive on Sunday.
Today’s 3-0 win for Brighouse Town over Pontefract Collieries in the Evo-Stik First Division East play-off final has left Heybridge still in with a points-per-game score which gives them a shot of going up – should they beat the Jammers on their own patch.
Swifts now need Cinderford Town (whose PPG means they cannot go up) to win at Yate Town (who can go up) in the Evo-Stik Southern Division One South play-off final on Monday – to make sure a win over Maldon is not in vain.
Promotion permutations aside, the derby at Park Drive has all the makings of a modern-day classic with Swifts chairman Gary White joking it could be as epic as the Battle of Maldon in 991AD – which saw the Anglo-Saxons involved in a huge dust-up with the Vikings!
Swifts booked their spot in the final with a brilliant 2-0 win at Aveley in midweek, which came despite being reduced to nine-men after two red cards in the second half. Maldon booked their spot with a tense 1-0 home win over Coggeshall.
Swifts lost 3-2 in the Bostik North at Park Drive in August and the teams played out a 1-1 at the Aspen Waite Arena on Boxing Day, with ex-Swift Jack Cawley scoring for the Jammers.
Kick-off at Park Drive is at 3pm and a huge crowd is expected.
