SWIFTS are launching new football training sessions for girls next season – and are keen for young players to sign up now.

Heybridge youth teams committee member Susan Little is pioneering a project for 5-11 year-olds which will run a first weekly session at the Aspen Waite Arena between 10-11am on Saturday, September 14.

Susan, whose son plays in a youth team at Swifts, is currently undertaking a Level 1 FA coaching course and will become fully qualified in July.

She said: “I decided to start this because it’s the one thing we don’t really push at Swifts. I think we have one girl in all our 19 youth teams.

“The idea is to get girls in the local area into football by offering female-only sessions.

“Then if they want to get into mixed teams then hopefully they’ll have the confidence to do so.

“If we have enough in particular age groups we will also look at developing them into stand-alone teams and putting them into local girls’ leagues.”
