SWIFTS Under-17s manager Danny Hunt hailed them as “outstanding” after they completed a brilliant double on Saturday.
A brace from Asa Cansdale helped Swifts claim a memorable 2-1 win over Romford in the Chelmsford Youth League Trophy final in front of a crowd of more than 200 at Parkside.
League champions Heybridge had already enjoyed 4-2 and 7-4 wins over Boro this season but were taking nothing for granted against a talented side.
Swifts took a fifth-minute lead after some great work from Matt Morley created a chance for Cansdale and he turned his marker before firing home.
And it was 2-0 soon after when Josh Lodge received the ball on the right-hand side and whipped in a great delivery for Cansdale to head his second.
Romford had a goal disallowed for offside but it was Swifts who had the better chances in the first half, with Matt Morley causing real problems down the left-hand side.
Boro started the second half well and pulled a goal back with a close-range header.
And despite a tight and at times nervy finish to the game, Swifts saw it out – much to the delight of the travelling Black & White Army.
It was another terrific day for a side which won their division by nine points, scoring 89 goals over 20 games in which they won 18, drew one and lost one.
Danny said: “We took over these boys at Under-13 level and the progression they’ve made in playing style, professionalism and attitude is just astounding.
“I’m proud of all of them. This side has now played in five finals and won four, and they have created so many lasting memories.
“We would like to thank our fans, our guys from Manchester who come down to watch the game, and especially our sponsor, who not only come to the game but bought drinks for the boys before the game and also pizza afterwards!
“It was a very kind gesture so I am happy to give a big shout out to Paul’s Plaice fish and chip shop in Heybridge.”
